Blue Tier – Three Notch Track
After a epic day one in the Wyniford River we headed off after slowly packing up camp to the start of the Three notch Track via some forestry roads. This track is the original pack horse track all the tin miners used to transport their tin out to Boobyalla on the coast to be transported by ship. It is some what ironic that all the mining activity in the North East eventually silted up the Boobyalla port and it had to close.
The track start is marked by a standard forestry sign warning about hazards and the like. We dismissed this as one of us had walked the track not that long ago and the grade is quite gentle to accommodate the horses in days gone by. How right the sign was as it turned out. The track has had no maintenance at all and we very quickly ended up pushing through thick ferns, foliage and fallen trees. You spend most of the time on this track in thick forest following the contours around hills and valleys with the occasional crossing of creeks. Plenty of water was flowing in most creeks as it had rained recently.
It was fortunate for the track markers in the trees as you could get off track very easily in quite a few places. The old benched track is really obvious in some places and almost non existent in others. Latter sections of the track were in much better condition and clear of most obstructions. After a lunch stop we quickly gained the turn off to Mt Michael around 12:45. We did not do the loop over the mountain today as it is easily done from this end some other time. Soon we were on an old track and some old bridges are crossed before emerging on Sun Flats Road for a quick blast up the hill on the gravel road in the blazing sun to the car by 13:20. The end of an interesting and different walk. There is so much history and hidden features in this area you could spend ages exploring it all.
