Overland – Day 2
Overland – Day 2 – Burt Nichols to Kia Ora (13Km)
A bit tardy out of bed on day 2 but we eventually had a look around the hut area and headed off towards Du Cane Gap. The others had left really early to catch the morning ferry. After stopping to admire the 'bum tree' and taking a few silly photo's we arrived at Du Cane Gap around 11:20 with only some slight drizzle during the morning.
We dropped our packs at the Hartnett Falls junction and headed down to see a very spectacular water fall. We trekked down into the gorge and walked up towards the base of the falls. Plenty of water flowing today. Bit of lunch back at the junction and on to Ferguson and D-Alton Falls. A bit of elevation change going to all the falls reminded our legs of the day before.
After mucking around for ages at the falls we got to Du Cane Hut for a quick rest and explore as the day was almost over and we wanted to make it to Kia Ora hut. As we arrived the rain got quite heavy and persisted as we walked at an increased pace to avoid getting the head lamps out.
We arrived at Kia Ora hut in the dark but smelt the coal fire a long way out and knew it was going to be warm on arrival. A small group from Overseas and Sydney in the hut had been their all day. Good company, good home made dehydrated food but an average night sleep.
