Overland – Day 1
Overland – Day 1 – Cynthia Bay to Bert Nichols Hut (28Km)
On day 0 (yesterday) we had placed our truck at Ronnie Creek to be their what ever time of the day or night we finished. This was the most flexible plan as we could do a variable amount of days to walk our chosen South to North trek.
Our good friend Paul had offered to drive us to Lake St Clair before work on the first day. Not sure how he did any work that day and stayed awake but he fare welled us at 5:20AM and off we went into the darkness with head lamps to walk around the lake.
Eventually the sun rose behind the clouds and sunrise was pleasant as we could dispense with the head lamps. We walked on till we got to Echo Point Hut and stopped here for breakfast around 9AM. Lunch at Narcissus Hut and we had so much time left we decided to have a big first day and push on to Bert Nichols. Some light rain was more of an annoyance than anything during the morning.
We arrived at Bert Nichols some what shattered by the big 28Km day and the early start. A few people in the hut had the fire going and were good company. We had a few games of cribbage, tea and collapsed into bed pleased we could now have a couple of easy days and had a day up our sleeve to spend at Pelion on the peaks.
