Day 12 – A Camel, double selfie and a hole in the ground.
Not a very exciting blog today I’m afraid blog followers. After a freezing night at Kings Creek Station and I mean FREEZING! as in the condensation from our breath had frozen on the inside of the canvas and the thermometer reading 1degree inside kind of freezing…never again will we say “lets not bother putting the fly on the camper tonight”. We headed for Alice Springs with a slight backtrack and then a rough ride across the Ernest Giles Rd which is 4wd recommended and they were right. It was rough but ok and it was probably not as rough as the Gibb River rd will be in a couple of weeks. We did stop for this dude though standing in the middle of the road and he was quite happy to get out of our way thank goodness.
Another very odd thing we saw was three smallish Mitsubishi 4wd cars driving very close to each other with there headlights flashing in some random pattern, driven by Asian women. Col did have the cheek to say that maybe the hire companies make the cars have flashing headlights as a warning to everyone that the car is being controlled by an Asian women. Not politically correct I know but from what we have witnessed so far this trip not a bad idea really! The second and third cars were so close to the first it is unsure how they actually followed each other with the massive dust clouds coming out underneath the cars? The next turn off was a three way end to end waiting to happen.
At the end of this road just short of the Stuart Highway is the Henbury Meteorite Craters Reserve. This is a short walk to several crater holes in the ground with a few information signs, not overly exciting but a chance to stretch legs and do a double selfie in one of the craters just for Sam (haha). One claim to fame of the Henbury craters is the American astronauts visited the Henbury site before the first moon landings to understand meteor craters. The Henbury craters are quite famous and extensively studied, Google them if you are interested.

We have decided to spend a few nights in Alice Springs to catch up on some much needed washing and chill. It gets a bit tiring moving on everyday and setting up and packing up the camper and getting back quite late each day. It’s much warmer tonight although it’s supposed to be 1 degree and 17 during the day, I’m sure it should be warmer here this time of year but anyway it is what it is. The constant Southerly breeze during the day is quite chilling. Out of the wind it is very warm. The caravan park has huge gates that are shut at 8pm and you have to have a key to get back in…..does that say something about the locals?? We were serenaded by random fireworks and rockets in the local street behind the caravan park while preparing tea!

Hey Colin – do I see you still wearing a thermal top ?? – I thought you were escaping the winter chills by heading north.
Paul.
Yep still wearing a light thermal! This weekend the forecast is low 20’s. 1 degree every morning this week and 17-18 during the day. The wind is from the south and chilly, not as chilly as back home!!!!
