Hamilton Crags via Legges Tor and the Ski fields – Ben Lomond
A quick afternoon walk around the village area at Ben Lomond and up onto Hamilton Crags / Stonjeks Lookout. We have walked from Carr villa to Legges Tor before but did a different route and peak today. There are many possible walks around the plateau area. We started on the summit lodges track half way along the road today. We quickly arrived at the Legges Tor summit and the top of the ski lifts. This is the second highest peak in Tasmania (1572M) and was thought to be the highest for many years. During a survey in the sixties Mt Ossa (1614M) was confirmed to be mere 43M higher and Legges Tor was demoted to number 2. The southern spur of Mout Ossa (1580M) is actually 8M taller than Legges Tor but it does not count as a separate peak.
From the summit we explored the plateau and then walked down one of the ski runs to the village, passed through the village and across the road past the settling ponds and started up Hamilton Crags. Apparently there is a track here some where but it was not needed and we did not really find it. Bit of a scramble over the last bit on the large boulders for Sharon. Nice views up here at the impressive cairn. Views down past Ossians Throne down the valley to the edge of Lake Baker and stacks bluff. East and West Tower out in the easterly direction are the closest peaks on that side.
After scaling a few minor high points we headed on a direct route back to the car. We hit some small cliffs and lots of low scrub in paces and heaps of rock scree. After crossing a small creek we made it back to car unscathed. Best time to visit is early summer (NOV / DEC) when the wild flowers are out in full bloom.
