Wildog Tier Area
Johnston Track – Staggs Track – Sales Lake – Wild Dog Tier – Warners Falls – Havelock Falls
A little used access to the tiers above Lake Huntsman enabling a loop around the area visiting two waterfalls, a wonderful cliff and valley view plus a peak with a single point for the peak baggers list. It is also possible to access this area from Pine Lake on the Lake Highway. I have walked all three access this year.
The area is quite exposed but a great sheltered campsite exists at the base of Johnstones Peak Souther end as you come through the saddle. Some stone work exists here and may have been used when the now removed power line was constructed, remnants of which can be found scattered around the plateau. Apparently the steel and supplies were transported in from Pine Lake on a benched path. We did not find any remaining evidence of the benched track in our visits. Ritters Crag is named after the 'Ritters' who grazed sheep in this area and the back of the Walls. Plenty of old fencing exists around the area from those days. Toby Ritter describes the area in a completely different light to it's present day state.
Warners Falls is worth a visit. Approaching from NW along the escarpment a bit will also give you a view of the small Havelock Falls way down in the gorge. Careful scrambling is required to go around to Warners Falls from here or go back up and down the obvious valley next to the falls proper. A visit when good flows are present is advised. Good views of Huntsmans Lake from along here as well.
A visit to Wild Dog Tier won't take long but watch out for the boggy marshy section depending on what route you take. Pretty much every where up here is wet and boggy. You can see Ironstone, Bernacchi Lodge, Great Lake intake and plenty of other sites from this small peak. Navigation is very easy in this area in good visibility. Dunning Rivulet carves a spectacular scar through the escarpment but it is possible to cross it in several places through the gorge and further up past the last cliff line is particularly easy even in high flow. There is a small cascade to the West up through some Tea Tree on the other side of Sales Lake on the hill if you venture over towards the Dixons Track direction.
A nice spot to visit 'once' and possibly a good spot to go cross country skiing. Do as a day trip or overnighter. Could be a starting point for some less fished lakes to the West. One of the quickest walks to access the plateau anywhere coming up the Staggs track. Follow Bessells road to either car park depending on which track you take up. Watch out for the dodgy bridge that has a large hole in it but still easy to navigate (marked with stick all the times we have been up their).
