Mt Arthur
I have been to Mt Arthur so many times for work in days gone by. I have carried large 100AH lead acid batteries on my back, test equipment and flown up here in a helicopter several times as well. Today is a day walk with Sharon so she can experience the nice views in most directions but especially over Launceston and to the south east over Ben Lomond. You can also pick up three geocaches along the way.
Two access are available with the main being via Mountain Road to the sign posted 5HR return walk. You park about 400M down the hill from the start near the driveway of some houses. You will gain about 600M of elevation from the car to the summit and cover about 4.5Km one way. The original track started further up the hill through what is now private property and the start has been re-routed around that area now, you will see it on the way back down clearly. The second option is up to the locked gate at the base of the last section, turn onto Whites Mill Road for that route.
About half way up you come to a log seat and an area that crosses some rock scree. You follow the ridge from here till you go through a closed in cut scrubby section to join with the top of the alternate route near the old shelter shed. From here is is a quick but sometimes rocky scramble to the edge of the plateau and the old fire lookout tower. This building used to be full of communications equipment in days gone by but has been totally vandalised now.
The walk over to the summit trig takes a little while from here and the views are some what spoilt by all the communications sites on top but this mountain provides excellent radio coverage. If you zoom in on google maps you can see several of the shelters and a helipad. You get two peak baggers points for reaching the summit which seems one to many for this walk?
