Pillinger – Lake McCoy
Maggs 17 track to Pillinger to Lake McCoy loop
A great little day walk that can be done in either direction as a loop from the Maggs 17 spur road. This Geocache and this Geocache are available along the way and have more details of the routes to take.
We went up Pillinger first then down across country off track to the end of a large valley for a fantastic view under native pines where a creek runs off the escarpment. Good views down into Lees paddocks and across to Dean Bluff through to Cathedral. A small short scrub bash under a cliff line and we emerged at the back of Lake McCoy and a bit of sphagnum moss bog to negotiate around the lake to firmer ground. Cross a small creek and a possible campsite people may have used in the past with good views of the lake.
Behind McCoy you may come across a marked rough track that takes you out onto the escarpment around from where we were. We spent a while laying in the sun and then a quick easy trip back out to the car park for a nice easy loop with some great views and nice walking. Pillinger can also be accessed from the Arm River Track in two places on a bypass loop. A short marked track between McCoy and Pillinger would be a great addition for others to this area as it makes a great day loop.
