Quamby Bluff Revisited
A lull in the biking events enabled us to get back to our first love of being in the bush again. This was my second visit to Quamby Bluff but Sharon’s first. Low cloud on arrival was not inspiring but we hoped it would clear by the time we hit the summit. The sign said 5HRs return but I was highly skeptical of that.
Some slight drizzle before we hit the tree line and under cover. Pleasant walking and the large boggy water section was not present this trip. You break out of the trees and hit Sharon’s favorite type of walking ‘boulder scree’. This does not last long and then the track steepens for a while. Once you reach the saddle there is another tricky section of boulders to negotiate to attain the plateau. You can’t see the trig point till about half way across the top and we arrived in less than 1h:30 at a quite slow pace for us. We were in the cloud and a couple of fleeting views is all we got today.
We had some morning tea and waited around hoping it would clear but it started raining and in the end we left for the descent back to the car. Some of the rock sections were now quite damp and slippery. Another 2 groups of 2 on the way up as we descended and we arrived back at the car about 3h:30 after we left and the cloud had cleared on top of course. We headed down to Lake Huntsman picnic area for a late lunch. A large group there boozing on and screeching at kids at the top of their voices. Got out of there as soon as we had eaten and headed home after a nice day trip back in the outdoors again.
