Day 51 – Change of Temperature!
Short blog today because all we did really was drive towards Port Headland to the next section of our adventures. The temperature is much milder with hardly any humidity (we talk about temperature a lot don’t we!) so really quite pleasant.
We did detour into 80 mile beach to check out the caravan park and beach and found a lovely parking area with a wash down station for your car so Baz has had a bath of sorts, underneath anyway. The beach there is well known for shell collecting and sure enough we spotted heaps of people dawdling along with their heads down looking for shells. I found a few sand pennies which appear to be the very top circle piece of an urchin shell, very pretty. We asked a guy on the beach what everybody was looking for (apart from the obvious) and his wife who works at the caravan park told us about the rare winkle shell that floats all the way from Mexico to the beaches here. It is a really curly shell and very sort after. She had only found two this year. You can 4WD on the beach for miles and miles but we didn’t bother today and moved on.
After being up at 5:30am and away by 8am we were starving by noon but couldn’t find anywhere nice to pull in to make lunch until an hour later when we came across The Pardoo Roadhouse. Just after we pulled in two huge road trains rumbled in each with four trailers full of cattle and they stunk like nothing on earth! Nearly turned me vego, glad we were up wind of them when I made lunch.
Not sure what the coast watch tent was for?
Pic doesn’t really show just how many shells there were.
A whole lot of Big Macs in those trucks.
That’s it really we drove 430km and have pulled up in a free roadside camping spot beside the De Gray River 83km short of Port Headland along with an assortment of at least 100 other vans, campers, buses etc. As I am writing this a road works crew has just pulled in with a huge generator, water truck, caravans and massive lights, could be an interesting night.
We will go into Port Headland and check out all the big trains and ships and stuff that I find interesting (not a very girly thing is it) but I do like that kinda thing.
Impressive bridge we are camped beside.
