Day 47 – Fishing………..I don’t know why we bother!
Today’s blog is brought to you by Stones Green Ginger Wine so lets hope it makes sense!
We had a slow start again this morning as we had to dry the camper out before packing it up, another heavy dew overnight left the fly and the sides of the canvas quite wet so Col kept turning the truck round to expose the different sides to the sun. These heavy dews are a bit of a suprise but most likely because we are camped beside the ocean and it’s starting to get humid up here. A family we spoke to today from Broome said they had noticed a change in the humidity levels over the last week, time for us to head south. We called into the office/cafe at Whale song to say goodbye to Jacinta the owner and grab a couple of her magnificent muffins to snack on later, I really liked this campground it was small, friendly and unique and the only place so far I would quite happily come back to. Jacinta asked me if I had heard the whales and I wasn’t sure what she meant, I said that we had heard the slap from them breaching, but she meant had we heard a low grumbling sound every now and again which we had. This was the whales blowing bubbles under the water (can’t remember the scientific name for it) but it was a low resonating grumble. I was astounded that we had actually been hearing whales and felt so privileged to have experienced it.
After our goodbyes we headed further up the peninsular and called into Kooljamin Resort to have a sticky beak. We didn’t get very far as they charge you a day fee to enter and the campground was full anyway so we kept going. I wasn’t really sure about what camping was available further on as the whole peninsular is Aboriginal owned but I did know of one more place to check out that I had read about called Gambanan Campground. We pulled into take a look and found a huge area to camp in again with magnificent views and easy access for a spot of fishing. The office was closed but a sign told us to go and pick a spot and the owners would come a find us later to get the camp fees, very casual!
Could be worse I suppose 😉
We picked a lovely spot under some trees and set up and ate our huge muffins and then Col decided to go for a fish and the fun begins. Firstly, before we left home I bought a nice selection of fishing tackle to bring with us and apparently it’s still at home because after turning the camper and truck upside down the tackle was nowhere to be found, oh well we’ll have to make do with the few hooks, two sinkers and two lures we scrounged from somewhere in the back of the truck. All good until Col put his lure in a tree and I lost mine on the bottom. Plan B try some bait fishing, great if we had bait. I then spent half an hour looking through the meager amount of food we have left in the waeco and the cupboards and came up with some bacon, tin muscles, jelly beans, cold sausages and a piece of roast beef, needless to say the jellybean didn’t work. While Col was trying bait options the owners came round to get our money and asked if we were catching anything so I told her we didn’t have any bait, no problems she said just use those little shells on the rocks (well she was aboriginal I guess she knows these things) Col had much more success with those managing to land a huge fish which must have been at least 10cm. It got chopped up for bait but the shells worked better and then Col caught the other fishes twin brother. Admitting defeat we retired to the campfire for bacon and eggs and somehow our full bottle of Stones is nearly all gone.
Notice the socks n crocks combo……noice!
Holding it out in font didn’t make it any bigger!
Picked up his bottle and gone home in disgust.
PS Just for Karen, we did see a living turtle today but I didn’t get a photo sorry. I promise no more photos of dead things.
