Day 45 – Whale Song
Today we moved camps from the busy Broome to the very quiet Whalesong campground on the Dampier Peninsular. Along the way we visited the famous Sacred Heart church of Beagle Bay. The church has mother of pearl everywhere, on the alter, floor, windows and even the photo frames. It is a regular stop for all the tour busses that come up this way. We did not get struck down by lightning while we were their so we left while the going was good.

We will visit the resort at Cape Leveque on the furthest most tip of the Dampier Peninsular in the next few days and then it will all be south till we hit the Nulabore. The road was gravel for the first 90KM and then it turns into bitumen, it’s usually the other way around? We turned off at about the 170Km mark down about 40Km of very sandy and mostly single lane road. Whalesong is a small campground on a cliff edge with only 8 campsites and a small cafe. There are 5 sites along the cliff face and 3 just behind it. We got the very end and more private campsite on the western side. There was only two campsites left when we arrived so we booked a couple of nights to chill out here on the beach.
Camper as close to the cliff as we could
Pretty funky outdoor shower!
Dinner time
The lady on the desk was from Derwent Bridge in Tassie and drives up here every dry season to work here. She is a keen bushwalker and works in the Hungry Wombat Cafe down south the rest of the time. Just as we pulled up a whale breached just off shore right in front of our campsite and blew a nice plume of air and water out as well. We saw a couple of other whales but much further out later in the day. The area here is a breading area and rest stop for them.
Shell collecting
The cliffs must take a beating in cyclone season, camper and Sharon in view at our campsite
After the stairway to the moon in Broome we did not hold out much hope here when they mentioned it was on tonight but it turned out to be better than the one in Broome, still pretty lame though! The lady on the desk also told us a guy just left who stayed for two weeks and had some success catching whiting on the point so we may break out the fishing rods tomorrow and hope the crocodile they saw on the beach 3 weeks ago has moved on.

Weird creatures of the night?
Heaps of them along the sandy paths
