Day 43 – More falls and a stairway to the moon
Breakfast while watching the sunrise on the upper deck and then they had us back onto the big power boat to get us on the other side of the narrowest falls as the tide was turning. So after another fun boat ride going through the small gap at speed a few times and then back through the large gap and back to the pontoons. The owner and the famous helicopter guy left for their reef fishing trip and we watched our sea planes arrive with another load of guests and to take us back to Derby.

The flight back to Derby takes a different route than the flight out and you go over a lot more islands and bays before turning back inland and tracking in over the Derby jetty and to the airport. The bus driver this time to take us back had a personality and actually spoke to us. Safely back to the camper our third fridge disaster as it had failed overnight and everything in the it was warm and had to be put in the bin! We called in and got a bit of stuff on the way out of Derby and dropped it in the Waeco. The Waeco was not running properly either and while Sharon shopped I diagnosed a loose connection on the dual battery setup I had installed and fixed it up. I checked out all the connections and tightened everything up as obviously all the rattling down corrugated roads has taken it’s toll on them as well.

We left Derby and stopped about 30K out of Broome at a new caravan park that is half the price of those right in Derby. Derby is just one big take and they have everybody annex to annex and absolute top dollar for it. This park is still under development and Sharon describes it as ‘rustic’ but it’s fine and it’s only 20 minutes to Derby, just like living at Longford at home for example.
Derby has a special event for three days every month called the stairway to the moon where the ful moon shines on the mud flats and gives the illusion of a set of stairs rising up to the moon. Well we turned up for a look as we were in Derby and grabbed some noodles and a couple of ciders to take with us. The whole of Derby was parked on the foreshore with 100,000 camera flashes going off (completely useless of course). The stairway was pretty lame really but we saw it. Some one on the boat last night said if you stand on one leg and cock your head the right way you can see it. I can see what they are on about but it was a bit of a non event for us. The people watching and the amount of cars was more interesting.

Back at camp to write up the last two days blogs as I know some of you wanted to know where that spot message came from out in the middle of some bay up north. Well now you know. We really enjoyed it and it was expensive but you got two sea plane flights, two boat rides through the falls, shark feeding and a great tea / breakfast and it was very well run. You pay $350+ for one scenic flight up here so the total cost was in the ball park I think for what you got (just justifying it to myself!).
Only plan for tomorrow is cable beach and a bit more Broome. Sharon has already bought some great clothes in the short time the shops were open tonight. There is a huge fire up the peninsular where we might go next and campers are being evacuated so it may change our plans a bit. We will have to checkout the situation tomorrow.
