Day 23 – The Tanami road
Nothing exciting today just driving and camping next to another couple from Tassie on the Tanami. They are from Ross and doing the Canning Stock Route from this end. You connect to it quite a few hundred k’s from here at Billilura. We are camped on a roadside stop about 10Km south from the mines along the Tanami.
Start of the Tanami
We left Alice and traveled about 550Km today. The road has been quite good so we have hit it at an excellent time. Still some badly corrugated bits and doggy sections but in the main been sitting on 80-90kmh. Any slower and the corrugations shake your teeth out. Once you stop and you have to get back up to speed it is bone shaking getting there. Most surprising was the random sections of bitumen that varied from 5-15Km long, none of them joined but huge sections of gravel in between them? We stopped at an excellent lookout but the road had such loose stones we could not get up it in the 4WD so we walked, the view was great.
Salt pans in the distance
The road ahead
Paid the highest price for fuel today @$2.489L, luckily we only needed to top up and 17L cost us $43! Yuendumu is basically the last stop for fuel for about 750Km (assuming the next stop is open and has fuel). We have enough to get through to Halls Creek with the long range tank and some economical driving.
Not stopping to take a photo!
Heaps of termite nests as far as you can see in places then you see none for ages and then some very large ones. The big ones are the “upper end of town” and the hundreds are the “slums” we think. We are traveling to Wolf Creek Crater tomorrow and I’m going to impersonate John Jarret in front of the sign for a photo or two, must be the road madness setting in!
